What is CleanBrowsing (Family Filter)

CleanBrowsing is a free public DNS resolver with content filtering, founded by Daniel B. Cid and Tony Perez. It supports DNS TLS over port 853 and DNS over HTTP over port 443 in addition to the standard DNS over port 53. CleanBrowsing filters can be used by parents to protect their children from adult and inappropriate content online.

Family Filter

Blocks access to all adult, pornographic and explicit sites. It also blocks proxy and VPN domains that are used to bypass the filters. Mixed content sites (like Reddit) are also blocked. Google, Bing and Youtube are set to the Safe Mode. Malicious and Phishing domains are blocked.

How does CleanBrowsing work?

CleanBrowsing is a DNS-based content filtering (DNS Filter) service that allows you to create a safe browsing experience on your network. Technically, we are a DNS resolver. DNS resolvers are a core piece of how the internet works. Every device connecting to the internet makes use of DNS.

Is CleanBrowsing a VPN?

CleanBrowsing provides a DNS-based content filtering service, but like most DNS services it is limited by what is happening on the network it is being deployed on. While our system will work to block access to VPN sites, its effectiveness is limited to what the network, and local device, allow.

Is CleanBrowsing effective?

The CleanBrowsing DNS Firewall is the most effective solution for mitigating threats on your network. Protection against phishing and malware, with optional filters to block access to adult content, proxies, gambling, torrent and many other categories.
